What are the benifits and bad benifits of following a religion?

Doing it for a project, sources WOULD be nice. But like what are the drawbacks for people who follow religion.... whats bad about it, i know that is has caused many wars and deaths between countries. but many people believe that they go to heaven if they follow christianity ( i am a christian)
