Why do firefighters hook up lights to their personal cars ?

I find this silly and amusing at the same time. Why do some firemen (and yes, it's always the men) install emergency lights in or on their personal vehicles ? Are they that desperate for attention or do they just want to get out of a speeding ticket ?
