Why do we have Jack-O-Lanterns at Halloween? I've researched traditions of Samhain,but haven't found any info?

I'm finding out more and more about pagan traditions so I just wondered where the tradition of pumpkin lanterns comes from? Is it anything to do with Samhain or one of the many commercial things that actually has no relevance to the actual tradition of Samhain?
